Beat the Heat With Tiger Crystal: Tips to Stay Cool in Malaysia

Malaysian heat is no joke, especially in the hottest months of the year. Stepping outside for a barbecue or a day out can feel exhausting, and our love of spicy food does not help. In April 2021, Tiger Crystal ran its “Beat the Heat” campaign around exactly this, so here is a look at the beer plus a few of my favourite ways to stay cool.

Why Tiger Crystal Suits Hot Weather

Tiger Crystal is cold filtered at -1°C, which gives it a crisp, light body and a less bitter taste than a regular lager. That makes it easy to drink when it is hot, and it pairs well with spicy, oily food like satay, chicken wings or grilled seafood, where a heavier beer can feel too much. I first tried it at its launch at KL’s Coolest Bar in Publika.

During the campaign, Tiger gave away 10,000 free cans at participating outlets and bundled 6-can packs with Tiger Crystal merchandise.

Other Ways to Beat the Heat in Malaysia

  • Go for local cold desserts: cendol, ais kacang and other shaved ice desserts are made for this weather.
  • Drink coconut water: fresh young coconut is refreshing and easy to find at hawker stalls.
  • Time your outings: plan outdoor activities for early morning or evening and save the afternoon for air-conditioned cafes.
  • Balance spicy meals: pair sambal-heavy dishes with cooling sides like cucumber, raita or a glass of iced lime juice.
  • Stay hydrated: if you are drinking alcohol, alternate with plenty of water.

Final Thoughts

A crisp, ice-cold lager with good food and friends is one of the simple joys of a hot Malaysian evening. Just remember to drink responsibly and never drink and drive.
