Tiger Crystal Launch @ KL’s Coolest Bar, Publika
In August 2019, Tiger launched Tiger Crystal in Malaysia, and to celebrate, it built “KL’s Coolest Bar”: a sub-zero cold room at The Square, Publika. I went along for the launch weekend, and drinking a beer inside a freezer in the middle of KL was a fun experience.
What Makes Tiger Crystal Different
Tiger Crystal is a lager that is cold filtered at -1°C to lock in aroma and flavour. It is brewed with light-stable hops, which give it a pale golden colour and a rounder, less bitter taste than a regular lager. It comes in a clear flint bottle that shows off its clarity, and at launch it was sold in cans (320ml) and bottles (325ml and 600ml).
Inside the Ice Bar
Guests put on winter jackets and gloves before stepping into the cold room. Inside were interactive displays about the brewing process, ice sculptures and art installations, leading up to an ice bar made from real ice. The first sip was served in glasses carved from blocks of ice, which was a fun touch. The beer itself was crisp, light and very easy to drink, which suits our hot weather.
Music and Street Food
Back outside in the warmth, local acts including Ryot Jones, An Honest Mistake, Kaya and DJ Bunga kept the crowd going all weekend.
No Tiger event is complete without street food. Kent Lee’s signature Siew Yuk was the perfect thing to warm up with after the ice bar, and Bacon It served its porky popcorn with bacon glazed in Tiger Crystal. MyBurgerLab, My Boba Lab and The Social rounded out the line-up, with dishes chosen to pair with the new brew.
