In late 2021, Tiger Crystal launched FireStarter, an online platform that encouraged people to pick up a new hobby. Four local mentors shared weekly video tutorials and live sessions, and participants received starter kits to follow along at home. If you have been meaning to try something new, here are the four skills it covered.

Without waves nearby, surfer Aaron Chan turned to surfskating, a type of skateboarding that mimics the carving motion of surfing. His tutorials covered the fundamentals, a few tricks and, importantly, how to ride safely. It is a fun way to stay active, and all you need is a board and an empty car park.

Don Michael of Happyfingers Jumps showed that skipping is much more than a playground game. He taught footwork patterns and tricks that turn a simple workout into something creative, and it needs almost no space or equipment.

Meng from All Is Amazing taught creative photography using only a phone, including a mini fashion shoot. This one is close to my heart as a food blogger. My own tips for food photos: shoot near a window for soft natural light, try an overhead angle for flat dishes, wipe your lens first, and keep the background simple.

Mavic, founder of Craft at No.7, has years of experience teaching students from around the world. Her sessions covered silkscreen printing, acrylic pour painting, jesmonite coasters and soy wax candles, all relaxing projects that also make great gifts.

The FireStarter sessions have ended, but all four hobbies are easy to start, with plenty of local classes and online tutorials available. Pick one that sparks your interest and give it a go.
