In December 2021, I headed up to Genting Highlands for the launch of The Alps, the first flagship bar for Edelweiss wheat beer in Malaysia. Having first tried Edelweiss through an at-home tasting kit earlier that year, it was great to finally enjoy it in a proper Alpine-themed setting, with Genting’s cool mountain air as a bonus.

The Alps is located at SkyAvenue mall, and the whole space is styled to capture the feel of the Austrian mountains. The highlight is the view from the first floor, which makes a cold beer taste even better. Almost every corner is photo-friendly, so come with your phone charged.

Guests were served Austrian dishes to go with ice-cold Edelweiss. We also learned what makes the beer distinctive: all-natural ingredients and a blend of mountain herbs, which give it a fresh finish and a subtle fruity aftertaste.
The most fun part was pouring my own beer from the Edelweiss Blade, a compact draught machine. Getting the right amount of foam is harder than it looks!

There was also a claw machine where guests could win prizes like Genting stays, food and drink vouchers and Edelweiss merchandise, a playful touch that got everyone queuing up.

Genting Highlands is about an hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur. You can drive straight up, or park at Awana and take the Awana SkyWay cable car to SkyAvenue, which drops you right at the mall. Weekends get busy, so a weekday visit is much more relaxed.
If you are in Genting and want a break from the casino and theme park crowds, a cold wheat beer with a view is a lovely way to unwind. Check that The Alps is still open before you go, as bars in Genting change often.
