Gong Cha is one of Malaysia’s favourite bubble tea chains, and in November 2020 it teamed up with Shopee for its 11.11 sale to launch a limited chocolate series. There were three drinks, each built around bittersweet chocolate, so as a chocolate lover I had to try them all.

This one blends freshly brewed Earl Grey tea with bittersweet chocolate, then tops it with Gong Cha’s signature milk foam. The tea gives it a unique fragrance, and the result is cold, creamy and refreshing. It was the most unusual of the three and a good pick-me-up on a hot afternoon. It sold for RM12 during the promotion.

For mocha fans, this pairs bittersweet chocolate milk with chewy coffee-flavoured jelly. You get the chocolate from the drink and a coffee kick from the jelly, which makes every sip a bit different. It is rich and creamy, so it works as a treat rather than an everyday drink. It cost RM10.

The simplest of the lot: bittersweet chocolate swirled into creamy milk foam. It is lighter than the latte and makes a nice palate cleanser after a meal if you do not want a heavy dessert. It was also RM10.
Like most bubble tea shops, Gong Cha lets you adjust the sugar and ice levels. With chocolate drinks, I would go for less sugar, since the chocolate already adds plenty of sweetness. Limited flavours like these come and go, so check the Gong Cha menu or app for what is available now.
The 11.11 series has ended, but if Gong Cha brings back a chocolate range, the Earl Grey Chocolate Smoothie is the one to try first.
